THE FIRST WOMEN SERIES 2

This week on “The First Women” is Dr Elizabeth Blackwell. Cheers to women who broke glass ceilings and thus paved way for upcoming generations of girls to dream big and achieve them.

Dr Elizabeth Blackwell ~ First Woman Doctor

Elizabeth Blackwell is the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council.
She pioneered in promoting education for women in medicine.

She was a school teacher initially as that was the occupation that was supposedly suitable for women. However, one day, her dear friend fell ill and complained that if only a female doctor had tended to her, she would not have suffered as much as she did.

This was enough to spark Elizabeth’s interest in medicine. She applied to medical schools, but she got rejected because of her gender.

Eventually, Geneva Medical College accepted her and Elizabeth became the first woman to attend medical school in the United States.

Elizabeth Blackwell also championed a cause on the Importance of Educating Girls.
